Fashion for Over Fifty-Five
When you open up your weekly magazine, you will find fashion advice aplenty. When it comes to fashion for us mature women, oftentimes the advice is in the form of ‘do’s and don’ts’. I find this notion of ‘what not to wear’ at best a little condescending and at worst, outright rude. So today, enjoy our tips for what to wear when you reach fifty-five – Do’s, do’s and do’s!
Do – Be comfortable
No matter what you choose to wear, comfort is everything! Your favourite pair of jeans and a nice top is a wardrobe staple of all ages. A simple day dress is another way to look put-together with minimal effort. Wrap dresses are flattering for most body types and are versatile from day to nightwear. A classy coat will compliment just about any outfit and are a timeless piece. And as 70-year-old model Linda Rodin says, the root of looking good is feeling good.
Do – Wear colour
Don’t be afraid to stand out from the crowd! Wearing a bright colour can set your mood for the day and brighten up those around you. Whether it’s a pop of colour or a head-to-toe theme, you can and you will absolutely rock it. See fashion icon Iris Apfel – at 98 years old she is famous for her eclectic style. She says it’s not what you wear but how you wear it! Amen.
Do – Be yourself
Fashion is not a one-size-fits-all and it should not be treated as such. It’s never too late to experiment with your style. Try something new and see how you feel. As quoted by catwalk queen and star actress Helen Mirren “I used to worry more about my looks than I do now. I think the great advantage of getting older is that you learn to let things go”.
